Naturopathic Counseling -
Using a wide variety of tools and techniques, a traditional
naturopath can assist a client to look at their entire
health picture and choose some identifiable and measurable
goals to improve their overall health and well-being. This
process begins with an assessment in which the naturopath
and the client explore past health history, current health
concerns, education regarding health and wellness and how
that impacts both the past and current identified concerns,
and then set goals and techniques to improve those areas
the client identifies as most important.
Once the assessment is complete and the client has
identified goals and a plan of action, the naturopath
continues to assist by encouraging and empowering change
through follow-up, providing additional education
suggestions so that the client become more knowledgable
about his or her own health and wellness path, and
assessing progress as the client works on goals.
During each step of the process, the client chooses the
focus, the method or methods preferred to reach the goal,
and the degree to which the transformation is pursued. A
period of three to six months is most often chosen as the
timeline for building new patterns of wellness. This
timeline allows both client and naturopath to assess how
well the methods being used are working, and to shift to
alternatives if progress is slow or absent.
At the end of the agreed timeline, naturopath and client
assess the goals and transformative process again and plot
a new path. The client chooses whether to remain focused on
some or all of the previous goals, and what new goals and
methods may be added. The client may determine all wellness
goals have been met and that she or he may only consult the
naturopath with something new is identified.
At each step of the process, the client is in complete
control of the choices being made. This control empowers
the client to see that he or she is indeed a powerful and
important part of her or his overall health care options
and the most important factor in the success of any
improvement in health and wellness. The naturopath is
simply a tool in assisting the process through education,
empowerment and encouragement.

Birth Labor Support -
Labor support is offered to expectant women and couples
with either doula or monitrice options. Labor support
empowers women to choose the options they feel are most
important in pregnancy and birth, and choose tools and
methods that support her ideal pregnancy and birth
experience.
Doula service assists this process using education, comfort
measures, support of both the laboring woman and her chosen
birth team, physical touch, and encourgement. A doula may
spend several sessions providing education on options,
demonstrating comfort techniques and relaxation strategies,
and building a rapport with her client so that on the day
of the birth, she can use her professional skills to assist
in whatever way is most needed. The doula may accompany the
woman on one or more visits with her care provider to
facilitate her integration and acceptance as part of the
birth team.
Birth Doulas may assist laboring women in early labor to
remain at home, where they are often more comfortable and
more able to remain mobile, upright, and free to support
labor with good nutrition and hydration. She can assist
with comfort measures, suggestions for coping strategies,
and provide professional knowledge and experience regarding
normal labor progress. This may provide her client with
enough comfort and encouragement to avoid arriving at the
hospital too early.
A monitrice adds additional support to the labor process
through clinical monitoring skills that assess the health
and well-being of the laboring woman and her unborn child
or children. The skills are employed at home; not at the
hospital or birth center. Once the woman arrives at
hospital or birth center, her delivery team takes over the
monitoring process, and the monitrice takes her place as a
birth doula.
Pregnant women (and their partners) can explore both
options and choose which level of care best meets their
needs and desires.
Neither Birth Doula nor Monitrice are a substitute for good
prenatal care and a licensed, professional birth attendant.
The Birth Doula and Monitrice work cooperatively to assist
the Midwife or Doctor in the care of the laboring woman;
not as a substitute for a licensed professional.
